Apple Silicon Macs prove twice as reliable as Intel

UK refurbisher Hoxton Macs released a June analysis comparing Macs sold between 2016 and 2025. Their data shows Intel‑based models return for hardware service at twice the rate of Apple Silicon machines. The fault rate for the newer chips sits at 0.9% in the first warranty year, versus roughly 1.8% for Intel units. This service frequency covers logic‑board and battery issues, the most costly repairs.

The gap stems from architectural changes. Apple Silicon chips draw less power, halving battery‑cycle counts on Macs and reducing wear. Fan‑less Air models eliminate dust‑clogged cooling paths that plagued Intel laptops, while USB‑C ports fail more often. Fewer heat‑intensive components also curb logic‑board and GPU failures. Additionally, the absence of moving parts means fewer mechanical failures, extending typical lifespan beyond five years for many users.

Overall, Hoxton’s blended warranty‑return rate fell from 2.9% in 2023 to 1.1% by 2025, underscoring a significantly higher durability boost across Apple’s lineup. The findings reinforce Apple’s long‑standing reputation for sturdy hardware and give current Intel owners a concrete reason to upgrade, as older Macs lose official macOS support after macOS 27.
