New IDC shipment numbers reveal a strange economic cycle in enterprise computing. While global PC shipments fell nearly 5%, manufacturer revenues grew due to widespread price increases. Component shortages, largely driven by AI data centers and government spending, are consuming memory allocations and raising prices industry-wide. Despite this downturn, Apple stands alone among major manufacturers posting shipment growth.

According to IDC's Jitesh Ubrani, the disconnect between falling units and rising revenue reflects vendors pushing through faster price hikes than demand drops. With worsening macro conditions and memory shortages expected until early 2028, growth rates may sharply slow in the second half of 2026. While HP, Dell, and Lenovo experienced negative unit growth, Apple saw a 10% shipment spike.

For enterprise buyers, the choice between MacBook Neo and Air centers on refresh cycles. With Apple Silicon's longevity, 4-year cycles are now standard. A four-year-old M1 MacBook Air with fresh battery remains capable, while first-generation Neo carries operational risk. Current recommendation favors proven MacBook Air for long-term fleet reliability.
