Apple Intelligence Supercharges Shortcuts

Apple has transformed its Shortcuts automation tool by integrating Apple Intelligence directly into the workflow. This single addition allows users to automate complex tasks that once required multiple apps or manual effort. With iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26, Shortcuts now features a "Use Model" action that can summarize content, search for information, or reshape text before proceeding to the next step in a workflow.

The integration handles tasks ranging from cleaning up voice memos to generating alt text for images and creating meal plans from grocery lists. Users can run AI processing three ways: on-device for privacy, Apple's Private Cloud Compute for more complex tasks, or by calling on ChatGPT for advanced capabilities. The same automation works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac without requiring additional downloads.

A practical example shows how to create a "Food Replicator" shortcut that pulls ingredients from a grocery list and suggests recipes. The Follow Up feature allows quick adjustments to AI responses without editing the shortcut itself. While limited to newer devices like iPhone 15 Pro and Apple silicon Macs, this integration represents Apple's approach to making AI a quiet helper within existing workflows rather than a flashy standalone feature.
