Apple has acquired Czech firm PlasmaSolve, likely to tap its simulation software that optimizes manufacturing of scratch‑resistant metallic coatings.

Founded in 2016 by Adam Obrusnik, the company’s flagship product was the plasma‑technology simulator MatSight. Since the deal, the tool has been removed from sale.

Apple already employs physical vapor deposition (PVD) in its coating processes, but aims to refine and develop this technology through the acquisition. MatSight models both PVD and plasma‑enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to improve process designs.

With a small team of 2–10 people based in Brno, Czech Republic, PlasmaSolve has worked with early adopters such as Kolzer, Von Ardenne, and the Danish Technological Institute. The acquisition, reported to EU regulators in April 2026, signals Apple’s focus on advanced manufacturing and AI‑driven design.

The move aligns with Apple’s strategy to enhance the durability of its thin, lightweight enclosures while reducing production costs. By integrating PlasmaSolve’s digital twin models, Apple can simulate and test coating layers before physical trials, accelerating development cycles. The acquisition also expands Apple’s portfolio of AI‑enabled tools, reflecting its recent pattern of buying firms that provide cutting‑edge technology.
