Apple has entered into a talent and intellectual property agreement with Animato, a startup specializing in virtual avatars for video chats and tutoring. According to the European Commission's Digital Markets Act database, the deal grants Apple rights to hire certain Animato employees and access the company's IP portfolio, allowing integration of expertise without a full acquisition.

Animato is best known for Call Annie, an AI tutoring app for language learning via video calls with digital personas. Its software creates realistic avatars for educational and communication applications. Under the terms, Apple receives a non-exclusive license to Animato's intellectual property rights and can acquire its patent applications, giving Cupertino access to the startup's avatar creation technology and engineering talent.

This deal structure has become common for AI startups as regulatory scrutiny of Big Tech acquisitions intensifies. Apple has pursued similar IP licensing and acqui-hire transactions recently with PromptAI, WhyLabs, and others. The DMA disclosure reflects a strategic approach to navigate regulatory challenges while still accessing innovative technologies and specialized talent in competitive fields like artificial intelligence.

For Apple, this signals continued investment in AI-driven communication tools. The company will likely integrate Animato's avatar capabilities into its ecosystem, potentially enhancing FaceTime, educational services, or future AI assistants. By licensing the IP and hiring key engineers, Apple gains practical access to virtual avatar technology while maintaining deployment flexibility across its product lineup.
