Apple adds contract‑style annual subscription option

Apple has introduced a contract‑style payment option for annual App Store subscriptions. Instead of paying the full year up front, users can select a 12‑month commitment plan that spreads the cost across monthly installments while still locking them into a year of service. The feature rolls out on iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4 and visionOS 26.4 or later.

For developers, the model presents a lower‑looking monthly price without sacrificing the predictability of an annual contract. Annual subscriptions that once required a lump‑sum payment now appear more affordable, which can improve conversion for pricey productivity or creative tools that often exceed $100 upfront. However, cancelling early only stops renewal; users must still honor the remaining payments for the user.

Apple frames the option as a way to reduce subscription fatigue by giving consumers a clearer cost trajectory, yet critics warn it adds another layer of lock‑in to an ecosystem already saturated with recurring charges. Users who value steady access to professional apps may welcome the spread‑out pricing, while casual subscribers could find the year‑long obligation burdensome in the long term.
