Adobe Pays $150M Over Hidden Cancellation Fees

Adobe has agreed to pay $150 million to settle a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit over its opaque subscription cancellation policies, though the company maintains it did nothing wrong. The settlement requires Adobe to pay $75 million in complimentary services to affected customers and $75 million to the DOJ.

This two-year saga stems from Adobe's controversial cancellation fees that many users found buried in fine print. Under Adobe's subscription model, customers choosing annual plans paid monthly could face 50% of remaining contract fees for early cancellation, while upfront annual payments offered no refunds after 14 days. These charges could reach nearly $400 for some users.

While Adobe's practices remain unchanged, the company must now provide clearer disclosure of cancellation terms. The settlement highlights ongoing tensions between software companies' subscription models and consumer protection, particularly affecting independent artists and small businesses for whom these fees represent significant financial burdens.
