OpenAI adds age prediction to ChatGPT for EU safety

OpenAI is rolling out Age Predictions for ChatGPT users in the EU, using account activity and usage patterns to estimate if someone is under 18. If deemed a minor, the AI will restrict access to sensitive content like graphic violence, self-harm, and extreme beauty standards.

This move follows OpenAI's recent announcement of ChatGPT Go and testing ads within conversations. The age estimation system is similar to Google's approach on YouTube, acknowledging it's not foolproof but aims to create a safer environment for younger users.

Parents will gain new controls, including setting quiet hours and managing what the AI remembers about their teen. Users incorrectly flagged can verify their age via a selfie through Persona. The feature is launching first in the EU to meet regional requirements and will be refined over time.
