OpenAI's long-awaited adult mode for ChatGPT will not generate explicit images, audio, or video, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The feature, initially promised for late 2026, will instead allow users to engage in lewd conversations with the AI chatbot. This clarification comes after OpenAI pushed back the launch multiple times, most recently in March, to prioritize other user-facing features.

The company is now focusing on 12 percent age verification errors identified by its own council on wellbeing and AI. Critics warn the feature could lead to unhealthy dependencies and underage access, citing cases where users developed severe attachments to ChatGPT. OpenAI maintains its age prediction technology meets industry standards, though acknowledges no system is foolproof.
