Meta introduces paywall for offline smart glasses feature

Meta is imposing a $20/month subscription fee for extended use of its Conversation Focus feature on Meta smart glasses, limiting free users to three hours monthly. The feature, which enhances voice clarity in noisy environments, operates entirely offline on-device without cloud processing. Premium subscribers gain 15 hours monthly, but unused time expires.

This move marks a shift toward subscription models for hardware capabilities users already paid for upfront. Critics argue paywalling local AI functionality — processed on the glasses’ chipset — sets a concerning precedent, especially when the feature requires no server costs. Meta defends it as an add-on for “power users,” despite the three-hour cap being easily exceeded through routine use.

The change highlights tensions over monetizing offline tech. Conversation Focus, launched in December 2025, solves real-world problems like crowded cafes or airports. Charging for a feature that runs autonomously on hardware consumers own feels like an unnecessary cash grab, undermining trust in wearables.

This strategy risks alienating users and stifling innovation in privacy-focused device design. Android Central calls it a misstep that could harm Meta’s reputation in the competitive smart glasses market.
