Google Messages Adds Trash Folder for Recoverable Deleted Chats

Google Messages is finally giving users a safety net for accidentally deleted conversations. The app now includes a trash folder that stores deleted chats for 30 days before permanent removal, rolling out to all Android users after a beta testing period. Previously, when you deleted a chat, it disappeared instantly with no way to recover it.

When you tap delete now, Google Messages prompts you that the conversation is moving to trash instead of vanishing forever. Users can access trashed chats by tapping the profile icon in the top right, where the folder appears below the Archived option. Within the 30-day window, you can restore conversations or permanently delete them using the available options in the trash folder. One caveat: new messages from trashed contacts appear as fresh threads rather than restoring the original conversation.

This addition comes at a particularly relevant time, with Samsung planning to phase out its own Messages app on Galaxy devices later this year. Android Central noted this is a small but significant feature that addresses a long-standing complaint from users who frequently accidentally deleted conversations. Having a trash folder makes Google Messages feel more complete as it competes for users who might be looking for alternatives to Samsung's messaging app.
