YouTube PiP Mode Broken on iPhone, Android

YouTube is aware of an issue on Android and iOS where picture-in-picture (PiP) mode fails to activate when closing the app. Users report that instead of a floating player, YouTube shows nothing and continues playing audio in the background. Google says the "vast majority of these reports are coming from iOS users," though some Android cases exist. The issue is replicable on iPhone with version 21.28 of the YouTube app but not on Pixel devices.

YouTube first identified the problem on Friday morning (PT) and stated "teams are actively investigating the issue." However, as of Saturday afternoon, there's no progress. Users can follow the YouTube Help thread for updates.

Earlier this year, YouTube began rolling out PiP for free users globally. The company asks for patience while working to resolve the issue.
