Setapp Adds Individual App Purchases, Ending Subscription-Only Model

Setapp is expanding beyond its subscription-only roots by offering standalone purchases and subscriptions for select apps. MacPaw announced that popular titles like Bartender, Downie, and AlDente Pro now provide monthly, yearly, and one-time purchase options through Setapp accounts without requiring a full membership.

Launched in January 2017 with 60 Mac apps for $9.99 monthly, Setapp has grown to over 240 apps across Mac, iOS, and web platforms. The new model includes MacPaw's own apps like CleanMyMac, Moonlock, and Gemini 2. Users can now access individual apps through their existing Setapp accounts, providing flexibility for those who prefer single-app purchases over the all-you-can-eat subscription.

CEO Oleksandr Kosovan framed this as Setapp's evolution toward an open marketplace ecosystem. The company plans to extend single-app options to apps outside the full membership later this year, signaling a significant shift from Setapp's original subscription-only approach. This change addresses user demand for more flexible access to productivity tools.
