OpenAI is restoring a five-hour usage limit on Codex and ChatGPT Work for Plus subscribers starting tomorrow, according to engineering lead Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux. The limit was temporarily lifted over the past few weeks, leaving only a weekly cap in place. During that period, OpenAI reset weekly usage early several times to celebrate milestones like adding another million active users across the unified platforms.

Sottiaux explained on X that the five-hour cap helps smooth compute load, keeping the weekly plan generous. He also noted that Plus users are often casual or new and accidentally exhaust their weekly allowance, creating a poor experience. The five-hour limit will not apply to Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions for the upcoming months.

No changes were mentioned for Enterprise or Edu accounts, which use a separate credit-based system. After hitting either the five-hour or weekly limit, users can wait for the next cycle or purchase additional credits. OpenAI occasionally resets limits for free, and banked resets can be earned through promotions and referrals.
