Jony Ive and Sam Altman teased a completely new AI hardware concept over a year ago, promising "the coolest piece of technology the world will have ever seen." However, Bloomberg now reports OpenAI's device may be a mobile, screen-free smart speaker with a camera and sensors rather than a revolutionary form factor.

The device includes advanced AI models and environmental awareness via cameras, but this combination isn't novel—iPhone Visual Intelligence, Meta smart glasses, and upcoming AirPods Ultra already offer similar capabilities. AirPods Ultra will feature cameras in both earbuds to serve as "eyes" for Siri.

While smart speakers work well at home, OpenAI suggested a portable device. AirPods Ultra's form factor is far more convenient for mobile use. The author cannot envision routinely carrying a portable speaker outside the home, making AirPods Ultra the likely more popular choice.
