MacBook Air touchscreens delayed as Apple tests MacBook Pro

Apple's rumored touchscreen MacBook Air is on hold as the company evaluates consumer response to its first touchscreen Mac. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple 'hasn't decided' whether to expand touch support beyond the upcoming M6 MacBook Pro, which is expected to launch by year's end.

Gurman reports that the MacBook Air won't receive touch capabilities until at least 2028, when it's slated to get an OLED display upgrade. The MacBook Neo, Apple's entry-level laptop, is even less likely to get touch support. Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted touch for the Neo's successor but recently reversed course, with Gurman stating he 'highly doubts touch is being considered for Apple's lowest-tier Mac.'

The hesitation reflects Apple's cautious approach to touchscreen laptops. While macOS 27 will include touchscreen optimizations, the company appears to be taking a wait-and-see approach. Apple has gone this long without touch support on MacBooks, suggesting it's not in a rush to expand the feature. The decision will likely hinge on how well the touchscreen MacBook Pro is received by consumers.
