iPhone 18 Pro rumored thicker — here's why that's fine now

iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to arrive thicker and heavier this fall, continuing a design shift that began with the iPhone 17 Pro. Last year the author resisted the idea while still using an iPhone 16 Pro, feeling the Pro lineup was thick enough already. But the author has since changed their stance.

The shift comes down to two factors. First, iPhone Air now exists as an ultra-thin alternative, proving Apple can deliver a svelte option for those who want it. That makes it logical for Pro models to push further into "pro" territory — accepting added bulk for better battery life and performance.

Second, the growing demands of AI workloads on-device justify a heavier-duty device. Apple Intelligence integration means Pro buyers will need more processing power, and a thicker chassis gives room for the necessary thermal and battery infrastructure. The camera module also benefits from a more logical placement.
