iPadOS 26.5 Smartens Up Magic Keyboard Pairing

iPadOS 26.5 introduces a subtle but convenient upgrade for users connecting Apple Magic accessories via USB-C. When you plug in a Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse to your iPad or iPhone, the device now automatically establishes a Bluetooth connection that persists after unplugging.

Previously, these accessories only maintained a connection while physically tethered via USB-C cable. Once disconnected, users had to manually re-pair the device. This new behavior mirrors how Mac computers handle Magic accessories, creating a seamless transition between wired and wireless use. The change was first spotted by developer Aaron Perris in the iOS 26.5 beta.

While this improvement might seem minor for iPhone users, it could significantly enhance the iPad experience for those using external keyboards or trackpads. The automatic Bluetooth pairing eliminates the friction of reconnecting accessories after each use. However, it may cause confusion if users want their Magic Keyboard to remain paired with their Mac instead of automatically switching to their iPad when connected.
