iOS 27 revamps Apple Journal with new streaks and prompts

Apple rolls out the first major update to its Journal app as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate. The refresh adds manual streak controls, letting users toggle between daily, weekly or automatic tracking. It also introduces a visual iCloud sync indicator that briefly flashes beside the entry count, clarifying when notes are uploading across devices.

Beyond sync, iOS 27 lifts the attachment ceiling, permitting more photos, videos and documents per entry—a frequent complaint among power users. Each note now displays a precise time‑of‑day stamp, replacing manual timestamps that many writers added themselves. A new “Reflect With writing prompts” feature generates context‑aware suggestions, nudging users to expand on details already recorded, making it easier to capture moments without juggling external storage.

Developers can test these changes in the current beta, with a public beta slated for July and a release later this fall. By tightening sync visibility and expanding creative tools, Apple hopes Journal will move from a niche habit tracker to a more robust digital diary, giving longtime fans a clearer, richer writing experience today and positions the app as a viable alternative to traditional paper journals.
