It’s been more than a year since we asked whether Apple should give users the option to replace Siri AI with a third-party AI chatbot. At that time, two-thirds of respondents said yes, with an additional 15% preferring the choice. Developer PDFU has found evidence in iOS 27 and macOS 27 code that Apple may support replacing Siri’s backend with external models like Claude or ChatGPT via the Model Delegation API in App Intents.

A video demo shows Claude functioning as a Siri Extension, though the feature is not yet enabled. The hooks appear in iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate builds, allowing apps to integrate Siri Extensions and override Siri AI’s server backend. While this could be a win for users and drive innovation in Siri, 9to5Mac notes the feature might initially be limited to the EU due to regulatory pressures.

Whether it rolls out globally remains uncertain. The publication invites users to vote in a follow-up poll on whether they would choose a competing AI over Siri if given the option.
