iOS 27 code: Leased Apple devices could be restricted

Code within the iOS 27 beta suggests Apple is developing a system to restrict leased devices if customers miss payments. This emerges as Bloomberg reports Apple plans an "Apple Upgrade" leasing program, potentially partnering with Klarna for financing.

The "App Managed Features" system, detailed in the code, would allow a financing app to check a device's payment status. If a contract is not in good standing, Apple's services could activate "Restricted Mode," limiting access to most apps until the issue is resolved. A select few apps, including Phone, Clock, and Wallet, would remain accessible.

Apps sending critical alerts and some provider-approved exceptions may also function. However, subscriptions for restricted apps could continue billing. The financing provider's app, not Apple, determines when to enforce restrictions based on its policies. A new "Partner Finance Lock" within Find My aims to prevent erasing or reselling restricted devices, though the partner does not access location data.

These specific code references were not found in the latest iOS 26.6 RC, suggesting the feature might debut with a later iOS release or the final iOS 27. Details may change before the official launch.
