iOS 26.5 Brings RCS Encryption and Map Ads

Apple's iOS 26.5 is set for release this May after beta testing, marking a relatively minor update as the company shifts focus to iOS 27. The version introduces end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iOS and Android devices, along with groundwork for localized ads in Apple Maps and a new Pride-themed wallpaper.

Apple Maps will soon feature localized ads in the U.S. and Canada starting this summer, appearing in search results and a new "Suggested Places" section. While RCS encryption appeared in earlier betas but didn't make the iOS 26.4 release, it's back testing in 26.5, though whether it launches remains uncertain.

Beyond the headline additions, iOS 26.5 extends iPhone features like notifications and AirPods-like pairing to third-party smartwatches and headphones in the European Union, complying with the Digital Markets Act. The update also includes a dynamic Pride wallpaper with customizable colors.
