iOS 26 adds AirPods camera remote control

Apple rolled out iOS 26 with a new Camera Remote option for AirPods, letting users trigger the iPhone’s Camera app without touching the phone. The feature lives in Settings → AirPods under a ‘Camera Control’ toggle and supports press‑once or press‑and‑hold gestures on the stem or Digital Crown of AirPods Max.

Only the second‑generation Pro line, the fourth‑generation AirPods, and the second‑generation Max support the remote. Enabling it replaces media and Siri controls while the Camera app is active, so a single tap snaps a photo, and a hold starts or stops video recording. Users must choose between losing media controls or Siri shortcuts depending on the gesture they select.

Because the remote works on the same hardware that already handles spatial audio, Apple extends its ecosystem of hands‑free controls, nudging users away from the Apple Watch’s camera app. Early adopters report the feature shines for group shots and vlog setups where the phone sits out of reach. The addition solidifies AirPods as a multi‑purpose accessory.

Support is limited to AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2, meaning owners of older models miss out. For those devices, the update still brings other iOS 26 tweaks, but the camera shortcut remains exclusive to the newer lineup.
