Fortnite Returns to iPhone in Japan via Epic Games Store

Fortnite has returned to iPhone in Japan through the newly launched Epic Games Store for mobile, marking another step in Epic's ongoing battle with Apple over app distribution. The Star Wars-themed update coincides with the regional rollout of Epic's direct-download storefront, which currently supports iPhone but not iPad in the Japanese market.

This represents a partial victory for Epic Games following Apple's regulatory pressure in Japan, where third-party app stores became mandatory late last year. While Fortnite previously returned to US iPhones and iPads in May 2025, the Mac version remains unavailable despite Epic's store existing for macOS. Players must currently stream via Nvidia GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming instead.

Epic Games Store mobile launches in Japan with Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys available for download. However, no third-party games are currently supported due to complex certification requirements. Brazil is targeted for the Epic Games Store launch later in 2026, with additional regions to follow as Apple's platform policies evolve.

CEO Tim Sweeney criticized Apple's territorial approach, claiming the company divides developers with discriminatory terms. The Mac unavailability appears strategic, with Epic waiting for global policy changes rather than technical limitations.
