Disney+ and Paramount+ are reportedly exploring the introduction of free tiers, a move driven by Hollywood's increasing view of YouTube as a major competitor. This strategy aims to expand audience reach, generate advertising revenue, and convert new users into paying subscribers.

According to a report by Business Insider, Disney's Chief Product & Technology Officer, Adam Smith, has discussed enabling free-tier content within the Disney+ app. This would reduce the barrier to entry, allowing more users to engage with the service and potentially be upsold to a paid subscription. Paramount reportedly has a similar initiative to offer more content to non-subscribers.

Netflix has also indicated that a free offering could be viable in certain markets. These efforts by major streamers are partly motivated by YouTube's significant user engagement and market dominance. While Disney+ had previously considered user-generated content for a free tier, those plans became uncertain. The potential launch of free tiers by Disney+ and others signifies a shift in how streaming services are looking to grow their user base and revenue streams.
