Digg Shuts Down Again After Bot Attack - 9to5Mac

Two months after its highly anticipated relaunch, Digg has shut down again due to an overwhelming bot problem. CEO Justin Mezzell announced the closure in a letter to users, acknowledging that the scale and sophistication of AI-driven spam exceeded the team's expectations. The platform, which relaunched in January following its acquisition by Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian, struggled to maintain authentic user engagement.

The bot issue proved more severe than anticipated, with automated accounts flooding the site within hours of launch. Despite deploying internal tools and third-party vendors to combat spam, Digg couldn't maintain the trust foundation essential for community platforms. The company had planned to use AI and multiple verification cues to tackle inauthentic behavior, but these measures proved insufficient against sophisticated automated accounts.

Rather than abandoning the platform entirely, Digg plans a complete reimagining with founder Kevin Rose returning full-time in April. The team will be significantly downsized as they prepare for a third iteration. Rose, who founded Digg in 2004, will focus on determining what the platform needs to become in an era dominated by AI agents and automated accounts. The company's podcast will continue recording monthly during the rebuild.
