Apple recently unveiled the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, introducing a new core architecture with three distinct types: super cores, performance cores, and efficiency cores. In a new interview, Apple clarified the rationale behind this structure. The super cores, previously called performance cores, are Apple's most powerful CPU cores, optimized for single-threaded tasks and delivering the highest clock speeds.

The efficiency cores, while not matching the super cores' raw power, offer significantly lower power consumption for background tasks, making them ideal for sustained, low-power workloads. The new performance cores sit between these two, balancing power efficiency with multi-threaded performance, enabling better handling of complex applications without excessive energy use. Apple emphasized that the naming reflects clear performance characteristics, moving away from generic labels.

While details about a potential M5 Ultra chip remain unconfirmed, the M5 Pro and M5 Max are now available for purchase.
