Apple Watch Exempted from EU User-Replaceable Battery Rules

The European Commission has introduced an exemption to its battery regulations, allowing devices like the Apple Watch to retain non-user-replaceable batteries. This revision, noted by Politico, addresses concerns raised by U.S. officials regarding restrictions on products such as Meta's smart glasses.

Under the original EU Batteries Regulation, portable batteries were generally required to be removable by users. However, the new exemption covers certain wearable devices where battery access could compromise safety, durability, or water resistance, or where devices are too small for safe replacement. This includes smartwatches, smart glasses, and fitness trackers.

While the exemption has been adopted by the Commission, it awaits scrutiny from the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. A spokesperson stated the change followed broad consultation and aimed to ensure safer products, not to yield to pressure, emphasizing that opening certain devices could pose safety risks or be technically unrealistic. This development removes a potential regulatory obstacle for Apple in Europe, preserving the Apple Watch's sealed battery design for the EU market.
