Global shipments of Edge AI-capable smartwatches surged 70% year over year in Q1 2026, reaching 25% market penetration, according to Counterpoint Research. Apple captured roughly 90% of those shipments, meaning nearly nine of every ten Edge AI watches sold carried an Apple logo. The firm defines Edge AI smartwatches as devices with a dedicated neural engine or NPU that runs machine learning inference locally for at least one health, safety, or interaction feature.

For the Apple Watch, this translates to the onboard Neural Engine handling gestures, Siri requests, and select health signals directly on the wrist (or paired iPhone) rather than routing data to the cloud. Counterpoint notes the category is shifting from hardware integration toward software optimization, with smaller models and OS-level access letting any app run inference locally. Research Director Mohit Agrawal projects Edge AI penetration will approach 32% by year end.

Health feature adoption accelerated across the broader market. Blood pressure monitoring doubled to 23% of shipments, sleep apnea detection tripled to 18%, and ECG support edged up to 34%. Apple's lead reflects its vertical control over silicon and software, but the rising baseline suggests competitors must embed local inference to remain relevant in premium health wearables.
