Apple Faces China Smartphone Demand Drop as iPhone Sales Slow

China smartphone shipments fell 12.6% year-over-year in February to 16.3 million units, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). This decline reflects a broader market slump where domestic brands captured 85.5% of shipments, down 15.7% from last year, leaving foreign brands like Apple with just 1.9 million units. Apple's position as the sole non-Chinese top seller is challenged by conflicting reports: Counterpoint Research noted an 8% shipment increase in January but a 23% market-wide drop that month, while CAICT's February data shows a steeper 14.3% decline across the first two months. The iPhone 17e's March 11 launch in China could alter this trajectory if government incentives boost sales, though analysts question whether it can reverse the sector's downward trend.
