Apple eyeing six new product categories, says Gurman

Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman told TBPN that Apple is developing six entirely new product categories beyond its annual iPhone refresh. The lineup includes AI‑enhanced AirPods, smart glasses, a wearable called the Pendant, a smart home display dubbed HomePad, a tabletop robot and a security camera. Gurman said all six are “major” projects in the pipeline.

AI AirPods represent an incremental upgrade rather than a brand‑new class, since they remain an iteration of Apple’s existing earbud line. In contrast, the smart glasses—rumored for a late‑year reveal or a 2027 launch—would mark Apple’s first foray into wearable optics, though shipments likely won’t begin until 2027.

The Pendant, described as an AI‑driven wearable alternative to both AirPods and glasses, will rely heavily on a paired iPhone for Siri and other services. Apple’s HomePad smart display is slated for a fall debut, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 event. A tabletop robot aims for a 2027 release, though Gurman warns it could slip into 2028, while the security camera is expected later this year.

These additions would expand Apple’s hardware ecosystem beyond phones, laptops and wearables, tightening the lock‑in effect by demanding an iPhone for core functionality. Consumers could soon manage home automation, personal AI assistants and even household robotics from a single Apple‑centric platform. The breadth of these projects suggests the company is betting on a broader smart‑home future.
