Apple is extending free access to its satellite features for existing iPhone users for another year, revealed in a footnote to the iPhone 18 Pro press release. The company first introduced satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 lineup, offering Emergency SOS via satellite and Find My location sharing. Apple has since expanded the offering with Roadside Assistance via satellite and Messages via satellite.

Previously, Apple extended free access for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users, but the latest extension now includes iPhone 16 users as well. To qualify, users must have activated their device in a country supporting Apple's satellite features before midnight PT on September 9. New iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo buyers also receive one year of free access.

Apple has not yet announced pricing for satellite features once the free period ends. Given the potentially life-saving nature of these tools, many expect Apple may keep at least some features free, as charging for emergency services could prove controversial.
