Apple is investigating ways to improve Safari’s cramped layout on the iPhone Duo’s outer display. Jen Simmons, Apple’s WebKit lead, acknowledged that current websites can’t extend behind Safari’s right-aligned controls, limiting usable screen space. Multiple reviewers, including 9to5Mac’s Chance Miller, noted that the 5.4-inch outer display feels awkward for web browsing due to reduced content visibility.
Apple is exploring more creative solutions rather than simply using viewport-fit="cover", which risks obscuring important content. Developers are invited to share ideas on how to better utilize the outer display’s full width, such as extending headers across the entire screen. The goal is a foolproof, easy-to-implement method that enhances the browsing experience without compromising layout integrity.
