Apple Blocks Updates for Launchpad Replacement AppGrid, Leaving It in a Zombie State

Apple has blocked AppGrid updates, citing similarity to its discontinued Launchpad feature, leaving the app in a non-functional state. Developer Attila Miklosi revealed Apple rejected updates for four months, freezing the app despite ongoing sales. AppGrid, a Launchpad alternative for macOS Tahoe users, can’t fix bugs or add features, yet remains on the App Store with Apple collecting 30% of revenue. Miklosi now distributes a modified version outside the store, adding gestures and hotcorners, but users miss core improvements.

The move highlights Apple’s strict App Store guidelines, which prohibit apps mimicking discontinued products. Critics argue this stifles innovation, as developers can’t evolve apps users rely on. Miklosi told 9to5Mac: “They told me to make it look different, but users bought it for its Launchpad resemblance.” The stalemate underscores tensions between Apple’s control and developer autonomy.
