Apple added a heart‑rate sensor to the AirPods Pro 3, letting users log over 50 workout types. CNET Labs pitted the earbuds against the Apple Watch Series 11, Garmin Venu 4, Google Pixel Watch 4, Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and Amazfit Bip 6. All were measured against a Polar H10 chest strap while tester Vanessa Orellana completed four one‑mile laps at varying intensities.

Apple Watch Series 11 recorded a 0.63% error and 0.89 BPM deviation, topping the field. The AirPods Pro 3 posted a 1.23% error with a 2.02 BPM gap, beating every non‑Apple competitor. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 showed the highest deviation at 4.5 BPM, underscoring the gap. Garmin, Pixel, Galaxy and Amazfit all lagged behind, confirming the earbuds’ advantage despite occasional data‑capture hiccups during the trial.

For users already paying $250 for the earbuds, the test suggests no need to add a $400 smartwatch solely for heart‑rate data. The ear‑based sensor challenges the wrist’s dominance, hinting that future wearables may prioritize placement over form factor. CNET’s findings give consumers a clear metric when weighing earbuds against traditional fitness watches, especially for runners who favor minimal gear.
