Apple's CarPlay platform now supports several AI chatbot apps, giving drivers hands-free access to voice assistants while driving. iOS 26.4 introduced support for voice-based conversational apps, and three major AI chatbots have released dedicated CarPlay apps: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok. Each app lets drivers start new voice conversations or pick from recent chats directly through the car's infotainment system.

The implementations vary in depth. ChatGPT goes further by displaying Projects—collections of chats organized by topic. Grok stands out as the only app allowing users to switch between voices from the CarPlay interface. Apple also enabled CarPlay widgets with iOS 26, though not all AI apps have optimized their widgets for the in-car experience.

Some apps lack dedicated CarPlay apps but offer working widgets. Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot both have CarPlay widgets that successfully launch voice mode without requiring users to pick up their iPhone. Unfortunately, Claude and Meta's AI features remain inaccessible—their widgets either don't function or aren't optimized for CarPlay yet.
