Singapore is entering the space race with the launch of its first national space agency, the National Space Agency of Singapore (NSAS), set to begin operations in April. The government aims to capitalize on the rapidly expanding global space economy, which the World Economic Forum projects to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035. The move signals the country's ambition to become a regional hub for space technology.

NSAS will focus on five key areas: research and development, industry growth, international partnerships, national space capabilities, and space safety legislation. Singapore already has a foundation with 70 space companies employing around 2,000 professionals. The country's strengths in manufacturing and technology position it well to capture new opportunities in the space sector.

The announcement was made at the inaugural Space Summit, which hosted over 330 organizations. Global aerospace companies like Airbus and Leonardo, alongside startups, showcased their innovations. The summit provides a platform for companies to explore opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. The event's renewal for a second year demonstrates the growing interest.

This initiative reflects a broader trend of increased space activity in Southeast Asia. Other nations are also investing in their space programs, recognizing the potential for economic growth. With Singapore's strategic location and technological prowess, the NSAS is positioned to be a key player in the evolving space industry, attracting investment and fostering innovation.
