Sapiom, founded by former Shopify payments director Ilan Zerbib, secured a $15 million seed round led by Accel. The startup aims to build the financial infrastructure enabling AI agents to autonomously purchase and utilize software, APIs, and data. This allows agents to seamlessly connect to external services without human intervention, streamlining the payment process for AI-driven applications.

This funding addresses a critical need as AI agents become more prevalent. Currently, each interaction with external tools like Twilio for SMS requires authentication and micro-payments, creating friction. Sapiom's solution simplifies these transactions, letting AI agents handle payments for various services. This could be transformational for developers.

Accel's Amit Kumar noted that Sapiom's B2B focus on the financial layer for enterprises is a key differentiator. The solution could eventually extend to personal AI agents managing consumer transactions. Investors include Okta Ventures, Gradient Ventures, Array Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Anthropic, and Coinbase Ventures, signaling strong industry confidence.

Looking ahead, Sapiom's technology could be integrated into vibe-coding platforms to automate payments for services like SMS. This would greatly simplify the development process, removing the need for manual setup and API key management. This round will likely fuel product development and partnerships as they build out their infrastructure.
