E.W. Scripps Co. has agreed to purchase WTVQ-36, the ABC affiliate in Lexington, from Morris Network Inc. for $15.8 million. The deal creates a duopoly in the Lexington market, as Scripps already owns NBC affiliate WLEX-18. The transaction requires federal regulatory approval and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.

Until approval is granted, Scripps will provide programming and marketing services to WTVQ through a local programming and marketing agreement. The acquisition marks a significant shift in Lexington's broadcast landscape, where WKYT remains the only other major station. Morris Network, which acquired WTVQ in 2008 from Media General, praised the station's legacy and expressed confidence in placing it with a strong broadcast company.

Scripps CEO Adam Symson called the deal a strategic acquisition that would deepen the company's commitment to Lexington. The company plans to strengthen its financial position and enhance public service journalism by assigning more reporters to neighborhoods throughout the area. Chris Mossman, former WTVQ general manager, confirmed that Sean Franklin of WLEX will oversee both stations. The consolidation raises questions about potential changes to local news operations as the two stations merge under common management.
