Maxwell J. Schaefer, 27, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and possession of a Schedule I/II drug following a deadly 2023 crash in Virginia Beach.

Schaefer drove 113 mph on Interstate 264-West, veering across all lanes before hitting a tree on May 7, 2023. The crash killed passenger Todd Reid Marcey instantly and critically injured Tajh Dorleans, who later died from his injuries. Schaefer was driving three passengers home after a concert at Peabody’s nightclub. Evidence showed Schaefer was under the influence of cocaine at the time, with a vial found in his clothing and paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Schaefer faces sentencing on May 27, 2026, for the involuntary manslaughter conviction stemming from the high-speed collision that killed two and left another with lifelong complications.
