Viral Japanese Monkey Punch Makes Social Breakthrough

Punch, the young macaque who became an internet sensation for clinging to his stuffed orangutan toy, has achieved a major milestone in his social development at the Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden. On Thursday, zoo visitors witnessed Punch cuddling with and riding on the back of another macaque, marking his first successful interaction with the troop since his birth.

Punch's journey began when he was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth in July 2025. Zookeepers hand-reared the infant and gave him a stuffed toy for comfort, which he carried everywhere. The zoo began reintegrating Punch into the monkey enclosure on January 19, 2026, after he had been bullied and isolated by the established troop. The strategy involved nursing him within the enclosure and pairing him with a gentle young female macaque to build confidence.

The breakthrough came when Punch sought physical contact from another monkey rather than his plush companion, climbing onto its back for a piggyback ride. While he still carries his stuffed toy for comfort during moments of perceived danger, zoo officials remain optimistic about his progress. The successful 2009 case of Otome, another hand-reared macaque who eventually outgrew her stuffed toy and raised four offspring, provides hope for Punch's future.
