UPS Shuttering 22 Facilities Nationwide

UPS is closing 22 package facilities across more than 18 states as part of its largest U.S. network reconfiguration in company history. The shipping giant revealed the closures in a court filing, affecting locations in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and several other states. This move follows UPS's January announcement of 30,000 job cuts and comes amid the winding down of its partnership with Amazon.

The doomed facilities include the Jamieson Park location in Spokane, Washington, and the Chalk Hill facility in Dallas, Texas. Other closures span from Miami Downtown Air in Florida to the Atlanta Hub in Georgia. UPS notified affected local unions and stated most job changes would occur through attrition. Last year, UPS already shed 48,000 workers as part of a broader rightsizing effort initiated in 2024.

The closures have sparked a legal battle with the Teamsters Union, which filed a lawsuit over UPS's voluntary buyout program for union drivers. Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien accused UPS of violating their contract and "trying to screw our members out of their hard-earned money." UPS maintains the reconfiguration creates a "more efficient operation" while claiming drivers appreciate having choices, including early retirement options.
