Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Rising Colorectal Cancer

A new study suggests ultra-processed foods may help explain the alarming rise in colorectal cancer among people under 50. Researchers analyzing data from over 29,000 women found those consuming about 10 servings daily had a 45% higher risk of developing precancerous polyps compared to those eating three or fewer servings.

While the observational study didn't prove causation, experts say the findings are concerning given that ultra-processed foods make up 70% of the U.S. food supply. Doctors point to multiple factors: these foods typically replace healthier options like whole grains and vegetables, contain additives that may disrupt gut microbiome, and contribute to obesity - a known risk factor for early-onset colorectal cancer.

The research adds to growing evidence linking ultra-processed foods to various health problems. Health professionals recommend gradually reducing consumption by filling plates with whole foods first. While eating some processed foods won't drastically impact health, the study found the biggest risks appeared in those consuming 10 or more servings daily - a significant amount that many Americans may be reaching without realizing it.
