Trump's $400M White House Ballroom Faces Legal Challenge

A federal judge will soon rule on whether President Trump can use private donations to fund his $400 million White House ballroom project, with critics questioning the lack of transparency in the arrangement. The National Trust for Historic Preservation filed a lawsuit in December to halt construction, arguing that Trump may not have the statutory power to proceed without congressional approval.

The Trump administration has secured donations from major corporations including Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, but most donors have declined to disclose contribution amounts. A nonprofit intermediary collects 2-3% management fees on each donation, raising concerns about the funding structure. The project's cost has doubled from its initial $200 million estimate, and the East Wing was demolished without public review.

Judge Ricard Leon expressed skepticism during a January hearing about proceeding without congressional oversight. The Department of Justice argues that halting construction would endanger national security, citing Secret Service concerns. Meanwhile, Democrats like Senator Elizabeth Warren are demanding transparency from the Trust for the National Mall, which manages the donations. The legal battle could determine whether the entire project moves forward or faces cancellation.
