Trump Raises Swiss Tariffs After Call with Leader

President Trump said he raised tariffs on Switzerland from 30% to 39% after a phone call with former Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter, saying he didn't like her aggressive tone. The president told Fox Business's Larry Kudlow that Keller-Sutter repeatedly emphasized Switzerland's small size during the conversation, which he found off-putting.

Trump's comments drew sharp criticism from Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who argued the remarks showed his tariff policies are not based on national security concerns as he has claimed. The U.S. and Switzerland had previously reached a trade agreement in November to reduce tariffs from 39% to 15% on Swiss imports. The deal also involved removing Swiss tariffs on nuts, fruits, fish, chemicals and spirits.

House Republicans Thomas Massie, Kevin Kiley and Don Bacon joined Democrats in voting against legislation that would prevent snap votes to repeal the president's tariffs. The vote allows Democrats to move forward with a resolution to repeal Trump's emergency declaration for import taxes on Canada, with Rep. Gregory Meeks expected to force a vote as early as Wednesday. The Supreme Court is currently considering the legality of using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose the levies.
