Swiss-US Trade Talks Continue After Tariff Ruling

Switzerland will press ahead with negotiations for a legally binding trade agreement with the United States despite the Supreme Court's recent decision invalidating the legal basis for most of President Trump's sweeping tariffs. The Swiss government affirmed its commitment on Friday to finalizing an accord that would stabilize bilateral trade relations and expand export opportunities for Swiss companies.

A preliminary round of talks occurred in Bern on February 12-13, according to Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who indicated that additional negotiations are scheduled in the coming weeks. The announcement comes after both nations reached a preliminary deal in November that capped tariffs at 15 percent. The Supreme Court's landmark ruling last month declared the legal foundation for these tariffs unlawful.

The Swiss government emphasized that considerable uncertainty surrounds US trade policy, making a formal agreement even more critical. President Trump has already invoked alternative legislation to attempt to rebuild his tariff framework, demonstrating the volatile nature of current trade relations. Switzerland's determination to secure a binding accord reflects broader concerns among trading partners about the stability and predictability of commerce with the United States.
