A 13-year-old boy swam nearly three miles through treacherous waters off Australia's coast to save his family after they were swept out to sea. Austin Appelbee made the harrowing journey on January 30th after his mother and two siblings became stranded while kayaking near Quindalup in Geographe Bay.

The teen paddled partway before his kayak took on water, forcing him to swim the remaining distance in fading light and deteriorating conditions. After reaching shore, he ran over a mile to find a phone and call emergency services. "We're in massive trouble," he told the dispatcher, explaining his family was "kilometers out in sea" and requesting helicopters for the rescue.

A multi-agency search located the family 10 hours after they first entered the water. His mother, Joanne, and siblings Beau, 12, and Grace, 8, were found clinging to a paddleboard. All were treated at a local hospital and released without serious injury. Western Australia Police praised the teen's "calm, clear communication" as pivotal to the successful rescue, with officials calling his actions "nothing short of extraordinary" given the dangerous conditions he faced.
