This trend extends across the tech industry. Apple cofounder Steve Jobs famously told _The New York Times_ in 2010 that his kids had never used an iPad. YouTube cofounder Steve Chen warned that short-form content creates shorter attention spans, while Microsoft's Bill Gates didn't give his children smartphones until age 14 and banned phones at dinner. Snap's Evan Spiegel and Tesla's Elon Musk have similarly restricted their children's device access.

Scientific research increasingly validates these parenting choices. A 2025 study of nearly 100,000 people found that short-form video use was consistently associated with poorer cognition and declining mental health across all age groups. As backlash against social media grows, with Australia and Malaysia recently banning platforms for under-16s, the private behavior of tech leaders stands in stark contrast to the products they promote and build.
