India's Tata Power is assessing potential sites across three states for future nuclear projects, according to CEO Praveer Sinha. The company is awaiting further regulatory clarity before finalizing plans. This move follows a December parliamentary decision allowing private and foreign companies into the nuclear power sector. India aims to drastically increase its nuclear capacity by 2047.

Sinha indicated Tata Power is considering smaller reactors, including small modular reactors (SMRs). However, high capital costs and limited private sector experience in India pose challenges. The company is in discussions with government entities and technology partners, including foreign firms, to navigate these complexities. Clarity on licensing and fuel sourcing is expected in the next six to nine months.

Tata Power is also managing its coal supply. The company anticipates meeting its imported coal requirements this year after receiving its full production quota from a key Indonesian mine. Tata Power, which has a 30% stake in the Kaltim Prima Coal mine, is also diversifying its coal sourcing from multiple regions to ensure a steady supply.
