A dramatic avalanche struck a passenger train near Zermatt in the Swiss Alps, captured on video by tourist Kirsten Osborne. The train was traveling through the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn route when a massive wall of snow barreled down the mountainside, engulfing the train in a thick white cloud. Passengers were stranded for approximately two hours before being evacuated.

The incident occurred on February 17 amid dangerous winter conditions in the Swiss Alps. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn confirmed that no injuries were reported and all passengers were safely evacuated in coordination with emergency services. The rail company has suspended operations on the St. Niklaus–Täsch route as a precaution while consulting with natural hazard specialists to assess conditions along the entire route network between Disentis and Zermatt.

This avalanche follows another rail incident near Goppenstein where a train derailed, injuring five people, with local reports suggesting an avalanche may have been a possible cause. The dangerous conditions have significantly impacted the tourist season in the western Alps, where heavy snowfall has created widespread avalanche risks across the region.
